The Hispano-Romans were composed of people from many different indigenous tribes, in addition to Italian colonists. Some famous Hispani and Hispaniensis were the emperors Trajan, Marcus Aurelius, Hadrian, Theodosius I and Magnus Maximus, the poets Marcus Annaeus Lucanus, Martial and Prudentius, the philosophers Seneca the Elder and Seneca the Younger, and the usurper Maximus of Hispania. A number of these men, such as Trajan, Hadrian and others, were in fact descended from Roman colonial families. The term Hispanic derives from Latin Hispanicus, the adjectival derivation of Latin Hispania , ultimately probably of Celtiberian origin. The term commonly applies to the countries once under colonial possession by the Spanish Empire following the Spanish colonization of the Americas, parts of the Asia-Pacific region and Africa.

“For example, a write-in of “black-white” was assigned a code of “black,” while a write-in of “white-black” was assigned a code of “white.” The 1950 census questionnaire removed the word “color” from the racial question, and also removed Hindu and Korean from the race choices. President Franklin D. Roosevelt promoted a “good neighbor” policy that sought better relations with Mexico. In 1935, a federal judge ruled that three Mexican immigrants were ineligible for citizenship because they were not white, as required by federal law. Thus, many long-established Puerto Rican institutions have had to revise their missions to provide services and advocacy on behalf of non-Puerto Rican Latinos. New York City was the center of the stateside Puerto Rican community for most of the 20th century. However, it is not clear whether these settlement changes can be characterized as simple population dispersal. Puerto Rican population settlements today are less concentrated than they were in places like New York City, Chicago and a number of cities in Massachusetts, Connecticut and New Jersey.
In other words, if you compare the genomes of people from different parts of the world, there are no genetic variants that occur in all members of one racial group but not in another. Europeans and Asians, for instance, share almost the same set of genetic variations. As Jablonski described earlier, the racial groupings we have invented are actually genetically more similar to each other than they are different — meaning there’s no way to definitively separate people into races according to their biology. The effects of this history prevail today — even in current definitions of race, where there’s still an underlying assumption that traits like skin color or hair texture have biological, genetic underpinnings that are completely unique to different racial groups. The idea of “race” originated from anthropologists and philosophers in the 18th century, who used geographical location and phenotypic traits like skin color to place people into different racial groupings.

Hispanus was the Latin name given to a person from Hispania during Roman rule. The ancient Roman Hispania, which roughly comprised what is currently called the Iberian Peninsula, included the contemporary states of Portugal, Spain, and Andorra, and the British Overseas Territory of Gibraltar.

The Spaniards brought with them the Castilian language and culture, and in this process that lasted several centuries, created a global empire with a diverse population.
